Shift4 Dine/SkyTab starts at $29.99 per month per terminal for the core POS bundle. The standard bundle includes the POS workstation, 14-inch touchscreen, integrated card reader, cash drawer, receipt printer, and POS software. Shift4 currently advertises $0 upfront equipment costs with qualifying agreements.
Yes. The base POS starts at $29.99 per month per terminal, and optional hardware and software can increase the monthly cost. Additional paid software options currently include online ordering at $34.95/month, gift cards at $25/month, and enhanced employee scheduling at $35/month, based on current Shift4 partner pricing.
Yes, but $29.99 is the starting price for the base POS workstation bundle. Restaurants that add handhelds, kiosks, kitchen displays, online ordering, gift cards, enhanced scheduling, or other equipment will pay more. Shift4’s current checkout page lists the core table-service bundle at $29.99/month.
Shift4 currently publishes a standard processing rate of 2.75% + $0.15 per transaction. Restaurants can also choose Shift4’s Advantage Program to offset processing costs or request custom processing pricing.
Current Shift4 partner pricing lists online ordering at $34.95 per month. Shift4’s public website has promoted online ordering as included under some offers, so restaurant owners should verify which package or promotion applies to their specific quote.
Not exactly. Shift4 frequently advertises $0 upfront hardware, but that does not mean the equipment has no ongoing cost. The main workstation bundle is currently $29.99/month, and additional devices can carry their own monthly fees. Qualifying agreements are also required for the $0-upfront offer.
Yes. Shift4 states that a Merchant Processing Agreement and POS Service Agreement are required to receive its $0-upfront equipment and certain promotional services. The exact contract term, renewal provisions, and early-termination terms should be confirmed in the merchant’s specific agreement before signing.
Generally, Shift4’s restaurant POS offering is designed around Shift4 payment processing. The $0-upfront hardware program specifically requires a Merchant Processing Agreement along with the POS Service Agreement. Restaurants that want to use a completely separate processor should confirm eligibility before committing.
Yes. SkyTab includes labor-management and scheduling capabilities, including building schedules, assigning shifts, using schedule templates, communicating schedule changes, and obtaining employee confirmations. Enhanced employee scheduling is currently available as an optional paid feature at $35/month based on current Shift4 partner pricing.
Yes. SkyTab includes customer loyalty capabilities and integrates loyalty with restaurant customer data and ordering activity. Shift4 promotes loyalty and marketing as part of its customer-management tools.
Yes. SkyTab has built-in reservation and waitlist management, including online reservations, table management, walk-in tracking, table-ready SMS or phone notifications, and real-time table availability.
Yes. Shift4 offers its Advantage Program, which lets merchants offset processing costs using available pricing options rather than simply paying the standard processing rate. Restaurants considering dual pricing or cash discounting should confirm the exact program structure and compliance requirements with Shift4.
Yes. SkyTab supports multi-location restaurant groups with consolidated reporting, cross-location performance comparisons, staffing visibility, and centralized performance metrics.
Yes. Shift4 supports multi-channel ordering and integrations with third-party delivery platforms through its integration ecosystem. Availability and any third-party fees should be confirmed for the specific delivery service being used.
Yes. SkyTab advertises 24/7/365 in-house support, along with phone, chat and email support, local onsite service, certified installation technicians, and an online knowledge base.
Shift4 is particularly well suited for full-service restaurants, quick-service restaurants, bars and nightclubs, coffee shops, pizzerias, and multi-location restaurant groups. Its combination of handheld ordering, integrated payments, table management, reservations, reporting, and restaurant-specific hardware makes it especially attractive to operators who want an all-in-one system.
Yes. Shift4 is a strong option for bars and nightclubs because it supports fast order entry, mobile ordering and payments, integrated tabs, reporting, handheld devices, employee management, and restaurant/bar-specific hardware. Shift4 specifically markets SkyTab to bars and nightlife venues.
The biggest tradeoff is that Shift4 is closely tied to Shift4 payment processing and its merchant/POS agreements. Restaurants looking for complete freedom to choose their own processor may find that limiting. Optional hardware and software can also raise the actual monthly cost above the advertised $29.99 starting price.
It depends on what the restaurant values most. Toast has an extremely mature restaurant ecosystem and broad feature set, while Shift4 can offer a lower-cost entry point, strong restaurant functionality, integrated hardware, reservations, loyalty, reporting, and potentially attractive processing options. For operators focused heavily on total cost and bundled functionality, Shift4 can be the better value; restaurants already deeply invested in Toast’s ecosystem may prefer Toast.
For larger, higher-volume or more complex restaurants, I would generally give Shift4 the edge in restaurant-specific operations, particularly table service, reservations, handhelds, kitchen hardware, and integrated restaurant workflows. Square is often easier and more flexible for smaller restaurants, cafés, food trucks, and operators who value simplicity and month-to-month flexibility.
A good restaurant POS should provide fast order entry, reliable payment processing, strong reporting, menu and modifier management, labor tools, inventory integrations, online ordering, handheld support, kitchen routing, customer management, and dependable support. The best system is the one that fits the restaurant’s service style, transaction volume, staffing model, and long-term operating costs.
There is no single correct price. A small restaurant may spend under $100 per month, while a larger operation with multiple terminals, handhelds, KDS screens, integrations, and advanced software can spend several hundred dollars per month. Restaurant owners should compare total monthly cost, not just the advertised base software price.
Integrated processing can make installation, reporting, reconciliation, support, and troubleshooting much simpler because the POS and processor are controlled within the same ecosystem. The tradeoff is less flexibility to shop processors later. With Shift4, integrated processing is a core part of the platform, so restaurant owners should compare the processing agreement as carefully as the POS software itself.
I am personally sold on Shift4. It is a powerful choice for restaurant owners who want to modernize their operation, lower the upfront cost of switching POS systems, and bring more of their technology under one roof. The real value is in making the restaurant easier to run — faster service, better visibility into the business, fewer disconnected systems, and tools that can grow with you as the operation becomes more complex.
Yes, you have to use Shift4 for payment processing, but their rates are competitive and with the combination of low upfront cost, restaurant-specific functionality, and overall value, it’s one of the more compelling POS options available today.
Just FYI, this is how I evaluate restaurant POS systems:
Some of the POS companies featured on this site are affiliate partners and may pay me a commission if you sign up through one of my links. In many cases, I’ve also negotiated special offers for my audience.
Affiliate relationships do not determine my scores, rankings, or recommendations. If I think a POS has weaknesses, I’ll tell you. If I think another system is a better fit for your restaurant — even if I don’t make a commission from it — I’ll tell you that too.
My goal is simple: give you enough real-world information to compare your options, schedule a few demos, and choose the POS that makes the most sense for your restaurant.
