Why Square POS?

Square is my top recommendation for most food trucks because it offers the best combination of affordability, mobility, and ease of use.  Square is not only built to process orders quickly and keep your line moving, its compact hardware, intuitive interface, and reliable offline mode make it an excellent fit for operators who need a POS that works anywhere.

Square also includes online ordering, inventory tracking, detailed reporting, and a growing ecosystem of business tools that can scale with your operation.

What Owners are Saying

What They Like...

  • “Fast checkout keeps the line moving.” Owners consistently praise how quickly Square processes orders and payments, helping them serve more customers during busy lunch rushes and festivals.
  • “It’s easy to learn and train on.” Most operators say new employees can learn Square in a matter of minutes, reducing training time and making it easier to hire seasonal or part-time staff.
  • “It works great at festivals and mobile events.” Food truck owners love Square’s reliable offline mode and portable hardware, allowing them to continue taking payments even when internet service is unreliable.
  • “It’s extremely affordable to get started.” Food trucks like that they can launch their business with minimal upfront investment and upgrade features only as their operation grows.
  • “It has excellent mobile hardware.” Owners frequently mention that Square’s compact terminals and handheld payment devices fit well inside the limited space of a food truck.

Common Complaints

  • Requires Square payment processing. Owners cannot shop around for lower processing rates or negotiate with another payment processor.
  • Processing fees can add up as sales grow. High-volume food trucks sometimes report that Square becomes more expensive than providers offering custom interchange-plus pricing.
  • Inventory may not be robust enough for complex operations. Owners with multiple trucks, commissary kitchens, or advanced inventory needs sometimes outgrow Square’s built-in inventory tools and add third-party software.

Best Runner Up: Toast POS

Why Toast POS?

Toast is one of the most feature-rich restaurant POS systems available and is an excellent choice for high-volume food trucks that need more than just basic payment processing. Built specifically for the food service industry, Toast offers powerful inventory management, online ordering, loyalty programs, labor management, and detailed reporting.
With that said, for me Toast is one of the best POS systems technology-wise, but the company itself has been known to be shady. Lots of hidden fees and lack of transparency when it comes to pricing. Not a fan of the people behind the curtain for Toast.

Cons

What Owners are Saying

What Owners Like...

  • Built for restaurants, not retail. Food truck owners appreciate that Toast understands food service workflows, with features like modifiers, online ordering, kitchen tickets, and ingredient tracking already built in.
  • Excellent online ordering. Many owners say Toast makes it easy for customers to order ahead, reducing lines during busy lunch rushes and large events.
  • Powerful reporting. Operators like the detailed sales, labor, and menu reports that help them identify best-selling items, control food costs, and make better staffing decisions.
  • Scales as the business grows. Owners who expand into multiple trucks, catering, or eventually open a brick-and-mortar restaurant often say Toast grows with them without requiring a new POS.
  •
  • Fast and flexible service. Owners appreciate the ability to support counter service, dine-in, takeout, and pickup from a single platform.
  • Commission-free online ordering. Many coffee shops like owning the customer relationship instead of relying on expensive third-party ordering platforms.
  • Modern customer experience. Guests enjoy the convenience of QR ordering, digital receipts, and contactless payments.
  • Easy menu updates. Owners frequently mention how simple it is to update drink specials, seasonal menus, and pricing.

Common Complaints

  • The total cost is often higher than expected. Many owners say the monthly bill grows as additional software modules, hardware, and services are added.
  • Contracts and pricing aren’t always transparent. Some operators report that processing terms, fees, or contract details weren’t fully understood until after implementation.
  • Changing processors isn’t an option. Toast requires its own payment processing, so owners can’t negotiate lower rates with competing processors.
  • Can be more POS than a small food truck needs. Owners running a single truck with a simple menu sometimes feel they’re paying for features they’ll rarely use.
  • Customer support experiences are mixed. While many issues are resolved quickly, some owners report long wait times or difficulty reaching the right support team during busy operating hours.
  •
  • QR ordering isn’t for every customer. While many guests love it, some still prefer ordering directly with a cashier.
  • Smaller integration ecosystem. Businesses using specialized third-party software may find fewer integrations than larger POS providers.
  • Learning curve during setup. Some owners report that configuring GoTab’s flexible ordering options takes more time than simpler POS systems.

Why Clover POS?

In the grand scheme of things, I’m not a big Clover POS fan, but they are a very good choice for food truck owners who want a simple, reliable POS that is easy to set up and even easier to use. Its compact hardware, intuitive interface, and fast payment processing make it a great fit for owner-operated trucks and small teams that need to serve customers quickly without dealing with a complicated system. Clover also offers online ordering, inventory management, employee management

Pros

Cons

What Owners are Saying

What Owners Like...

  • Simple and easy to use. Many food truck owners appreciate how quickly they can learn Clover and begin taking orders without a lengthy setup or training process.
  • Compact hardware. Owners like the small footprint of Clover’s terminals and handheld devices, making them a good fit for the limited workspace inside a food truck.
  • Large app marketplace. Many users enjoy being able to add features such as loyalty programs, online ordering, accounting integrations, and scheduling as their business grows.
  • Reliable payment processing. Owners frequently mention that transactions are fast and customers have little trouble using tap-to-pay, Apple Pay, and other contactless payment methods.
  • Good fit for small operations. Owner-operated trucks often say Clover provides the functionality they need without feeling overly complicated.
  •

Common Complaints

  • Your experience depends heavily on who sells it to you. This is by far the biggest complaint. Pricing, contracts, support, and even available features can vary dramatically depending on the reseller, leaving some owners with a great experience and others feeling trapped in expensive agreements.
  • Unexpected monthly fees. Many owners report discovering additional software, support, or app subscription fees after installation that weren’t clearly explained during the sales process.
  • Restaurant features aren’t as strong as restaurant-first POS systems. While Clover works well for many food trucks, operators with complex menus, high order volume, or advanced kitchen workflows often find it less capable than systems built specifically for restaurants.
  • Third-party apps can become expensive. Many features require separate apps with their own monthly subscriptions, which can make the total cost much higher than expected.
  • Customer support can be frustrating. Because support often goes through the reseller rather than Clover directly, owners report inconsistent service quality and longer resolution times when problems occur.
